regenerate: (of a living organism) regrow (new tissue) to replace lost or injured tissue.
transmute: change in form, nature, or substance
I once Googled whether cells regenerate in the body
and, if so, how often is it true?
I wanted to know if those cells he’d had his way with long ago
might no longer exist inside me.
It varies.
Heart muscle cells stop growing at age 10.
The achilles at age 17.
The skeleton is replaced every 10 years.
The skin every 39.
This skin –
the protective outer covering,
renewed with nurturing salves,
peaceful environs,
loving touch and care.
Regenerated.
Yet it’s not the skin where the unsettling lingers
It’s the electric current buzzing in what’s beneath
Perhaps cells that have not yet regenerated
Or the heart muscle cells that never will,
that stopped growing the year that he stopped too
This current is nothing new.
But is there some other way to release it?
That isn’t quite science or logic or the regeneration of cells?
Is there healing that can touch this inside current and ever so softly ask,
what are you?
how are you?
what do you need?
Can cells transmute in some other way?
